2009: The Year of The Drought
Tanzania faced a terrible drought this past year. The expected rains did not come in April and May. This caused a drastic drought that affected many people through out Tanzania including the Maasai. These fragile communities depend on the rain for their crops, trees, livestock, and most importantly for their drinking water. Kitumusote faced many setbacks caused by this unforeseen natural catastrophe. Watering holes dried up and livestock suffered. Crops died and people were faced with unrelenting hunger. Many people had to seek government help. Most of Kitumusote's self generated funds, normally used for their programs, were instead used to buy food for people suffering from their livestock and crop losses.
Luckily, rain came in the later part of November. Everyone is hopeful for more rain and a better year in 2010.
